What It’s All About
This charming program encourages everyone to turn off outdoor lights at night, allowing fireflies—and their magical twinkling dance—to shine through. The effort raises awareness of light pollution and its impact on firefly populations. By dimming lights after dark and planting native plants/wildflowers like milkweed, we can protect their habitats and enjoy their glow for generations to come.
As an active local member of the community, Southern Comfort Cabin Rentals supports and sponsors this growing initiative and the fun community activities surrounding it.

- Fannin County Firefly Day: July 2nd — a perfect way to kick off summer nights with your cabin crew.
- Firefly Hour 9–10 p.m. : Join the community-wide lights‑off event and watch fireflies sparkle under the summer sky.
- July Family Scavenger Hunt: Travel through 5 area parks to uncover secret "firefly words" with the interactive Lights Off, Fireflies On! The Game—available via the VisitBlueRidgeGA app or at visitor centers. Complete the hunt and receive a special prize!
Family-Friendly Fun
Interactive Firefly Game: Kids (and adults!) can search for secret words at parks, earn prizes, and explore firefly facts using the app or printable maps
Visitor Centers: Stop by one of three centers—Downtown, Main, or McCaysville—to pick up a fun firefly-themed gift for every child this July, once you have completed the game.
How You Can Light‑Switch for Fireflies
- Turn off porch and yard lights after dark, especially during Firefly Hour.
- Use warm, low-lumen bulbs when lighting is needed.
- Plant native wildflowers/plants to help create a firefly habitat in your cabin yard.
